On Wednesday, 21st August the Year 12 English classes travelled to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (AMCI) located in Federation Square. The excursion was designed to help students create a new understanding on the context of ‘Exploring Issues of Identity and Belonging’ which is one of the more difficult areas of the English course which will be assessed in class through a SAC and again on the end of year English Exam. At ACMI the students viewed the film ‘Skin’, directed by Anthony Fabian based on the true story of a black girl who was born to two white Afrikaner parents in South Africa during the apartheid era.
The students experienced a university style lecture analysing the ideas within ‘Skin’ in comparison with other films. During the session students were able to ask questions in order to broaden their knowledge and develop their own confidence to generate and explore ideas of ‘Identity and Belonging’ deeply. Overall it was an enjoyable day with a lot of information to take in and process.
