On Wednesday, 19th September, Gleneagles entered three teams into the Robbie Kearns Shield, an eight player a side rugby competition held by Melbourne Storm’s Youth Development Squad for Year 7 & 8 students. Coming off a defeat in last week’s 13 a side State Finals, both boys teams were keen to find retribution. After a tough day against some sizable opponents, the boys second team were able to score a try against an experienced Fountain Gate team, however were overcome in the end. The boys first team saw an amazing amount of success, taking out 1st place out of 10 teams, thanks in large part to rugby debutant Jackson Lambert, 8G. The girls’ tag side also fought valiantly against their opponents, securing a couple of victories throughout the day. The day on the whole was a huge success, seeing the girls’ tag team as well as the boys first division team qualify for the Victorian finals in November.
A big thank you to coaches Sue, Danae, Kahlia and Afeafe. While on the topic of Gleneagles rugby, a special mention needs to be made for recent individual successes of some of our students. Captain of the boys first team Navarre Haisila, 8K and his brother Afeafe Haisila, 10B represented Gleneagles at the Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union competition held in Tasmania. Their efforts got Navarre and Afeafe into the Victorian U14 and U16 teams respectively. Furthermore, Afeafe was awarded ‘Player of the Tournament’ by a Melbourne Rebel scout.
