The Fashion World of John Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is a new exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The Year 10 Fashion Design class had the opportunity last Friday to view this exhibition, which features over 140 garments, photographs and stage costumes. John Paul Gaultier is a French designer, who amongst other things, has created costumes worn by Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Beyonce on their world tours, as well as dresses worn on the red carpet by Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett, and who now specialises in haute couture. The students were fascinated to find out that some garments can take up to 1000 hours to be sewn, as haute couture must, by definition be sewn by hand.
The class attended an informative session run by Marge Stephenson, an educator at NGV before heading to Collins Street and Emporium to assess how various companies market and maintain their brand through their shop windows. The students were able to see how design elements can be applied in the fashion industry and I hope that those who intend to study further in this field during their VCE program have observed some things that will inspire their future work.
