Gleneagles Secondary College celebrated LOTE Week across the final two weeks of Term 1 with a number of activities taking place at lunchtimes and recess to encourage students and staff to develop a further understanding and appreciation of various languages and cultures. LOTE Week kicked off with the Language Perfect Competition for Year 7 and 8 students. Students were encouraged to come along with their computers at lunchtime to participate in the competition in which they demonstrated their knowledge of different languages (German, Indonesian and Chinese) by completing activities online and receiving points.
Congratulations to Tahlia How Williams from 8E who won first place in the competition receiving over 300 points and therefore received a $20 ITunes voucher. LOTE Week activities furthermore saw the presentation of different music at recess outside the gym from different languages such as German and Spanish and a poster competition in which students were encouraged to create a poster that was a reflection of them through their different cultures. Congratulations to Ivka Tomic and Jelena Zoric of 9C for their winning poster demonstrating Serbian, Croatian and Thai cultures through language, traditional dress, food, flags and well known architecture.
The conclusion of LOTE Week coincided with the celebration of Harmony Day on 21st March 2016. Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity with a focus on inclusiveness, respect and encouraging a sense of belonging. Harmony Day was celebrated with a lunchtime BBQ that included traditional German sausages, Halal sausages, fried rice and German pretzels. Students and teachers also had the opportunity to have their own Harmony Day Instagram photo taken at the Friendship Chair while holding flags to symbolise their different cultures. Thank you to all students and staff who participated in and supported LOTE Week.
