Dress Code (DEECD Information)

Purpose

To outline the legislative basis for student dress codes.

Policy

All school councils have the authority to develop and implement dress codes for their students with this authority arising from a Ministerial Order under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006.

Definition

A dress code:

  • is a written statement of school council expectations regarding student appearance
  • applies:
    • during school hours
    • while travelling to and from school
    • when students are engaged in school activities out of school hours
  • may:
    • define standards for the general presentation of students
    • set out broad guidelines about student appearance
    • require students to wear a school uniform
    • define specifications for garment design and colour.

Act, regulation or order

Description

Ministerial Order under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 Authorises the school council to develop and implement a dress code that covers any matters which a school council considers appropriate in relation to:

  • clothing and other items worn, carried or used
  • grooming
  • physical appearance and the general presentation of students.

 

Section 16(1)(c) – Education and Training Regulations 2007  States that the principal of a government school may determine the consequences to be imposed on a student for not wearing the school uniform in accordance with any determination of the school council on school uniforms, but the principal must be satisfied that the student’s failure to wear the uniform was because of the student’s disobedience, that the consequences must be reasonable and that the dress code policy has been brought to the attention of the students and parents.  
Section 16(1)(c) – Education and Training Regulations 2007  States that an educational authority may set and enforce reasonable standards of dress and appearance for students, where a standard of dress and appearance for students is considered reasonable when the views of the school community have been taken into account in setting the standard. 

Natasha’s Story – Student Voice

The Student Voice Committee allows groups of students to work towards positive changes while representing the entire student body. Being involved in this program was an exciting way for me to begin my year and has presented me with a variety of learning experiences. The Student Voice selection process enables applicants to gain confidence whilst completing an interview. My participation has benefited my group work and public speaking. I now have the chance to gather feedback from other students and bring forth their opinions to the Student Voice Committee. As a member, I also had the opportunity to become a junior school captain. After putting the speech writing skills I learned in the committee to the test, I was fortunate enough to be elected. I’m proud to be a leader of the junior school and especially pleased to be gaining valuable life skills. Being a leader has made my time at Gleneagles challenging, interesting and rewarding.
