GTAC Cells & Systems

Please note: this is a reschedule event that was originally to take place on 15th June 2021

The Year 7 & 8 SEAL students are challenged with lessons based around real world problems in Science. This program aims to get students using a systems approach in thinking about cells and the body and disease. This program provides an opportunity for the junior SEAL classes to work together and meet other high ability peers in a different educational setting. GTAC allows students access to materials and equipment that is not available in a Secondary School setting. It also provides exposure to PhD students as mentors working with the students on the day.
In Levels 7 and 8, the science curriculum focus is on explaining phenomena involving science and its applications. In this program, students investigate a case study of coeliac disease and how malfunctions in the digestive system and immune system of patients can contribute to its development. They perform an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay to diagnose if patients’ immune systems are producing rogue antibodies that target cells of the intestines. They then use research grade microscopes to view intestinal biopsies to learn about the damage that can occur when these antibodies are present. They link form and function at a cellular level and explore the organisation and interconnectedness of these two body systems. They make predictions and propose explanations, drawing on evidence to support their views so they can design interventions to improve the health of patients.
