Each week Gleneagles provide our Wellbeing News - your space for practical tips and conversations around health and wellbeing. Each edition explores a variety of topics designed to inspire wellbeing across our community.
Gaming can be a fun way to relax, connect with friends and learn new skills. But it's important to make sure gaming doesn't get in the way of sleep, schoolwork, exercise, family time or spending time with friends.
Signs you might need more balance:
- Staying up late to game and feeling tired
- Getting angry or having conflict with others over gaming
- Losing track of time while gaming and a loss of control over how much time you spend gaming
- Feeling physical pain/irritation in your neck, wrists, back or eyes
- Using gaming as a way to avoid the real world
- Spending more money than you can afford on gaming
Ask yourself: Is this a fun activity that helps you feel good? Is it balanced with other activities? Are you feeling more or less connected with others?
Tips for healthy gaming:
- Treat it as a reward once your other tasks are done
- Set a time limit and stick to it, and schedule screen free time in your day
- Take regular movement and stretch breaks
- Make time for other hobbies and activities
- Prioritise a good night's sleep by keeping devices out of your bedroom
If gaming is affecting your mood, relationships or schoolwork, talk to a trusted adult, teacher, school wellbeing or family member. Remember, gaming is most enjoyable when it is part of a balanced lifestyle.
