Have you ever gone for a walk and barely noticed where you were because you were thinking about something else? Mindful walking is all about slowing down and paying attention to the present moment.
What is mindful walking?
Mindful walking is a simple way to practise mindfulness while you walk. Instead of rushing or being distracted, you focus on what is happening around you and how your body feels as you move.
While walking, try to notice:
- The feeling of your feet touching the ground
- The rhythm of your steps
- Your breathing
- What you can see, hear, smell and feel around you
Mindful walking is also a great chance to take a break from screens, notifications and other distractions.
Why give it a go?
Regular mindful walking can help you:
- Feel calmer and less stressed
- Improve your mood and wellbeing
- Sleep better
- Increase focus and mental clarity
- Appreciate the world around you
- Feel more present and connected to the moment
How to practise mindful walking
- Walk for 5-20 minutes (even a short walk can help!).
- Walk at a comfortable, natural pace.
- Start by paying attention to your breathing.
- Notice how your feet feel as they move and touch the ground.
- Use your senses to observe your surroundings.
- If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your walk.
Mindful walking can be adapted to suit your own pace, ability and comfort, and there’s no right or wrong way to practise.
Where can you do it?
You can practise mindful walking almost anywhere:
In nature - parks, gardens, beaches or bushland
Around your neighbourhood - notice the sights and sounds of your local area
At school or indoors - along a hallway, around the oval, or during a short break
Top Tips
- Be curious about your surroundings. Pretend you're a tourist exploring a new place.
- Walk without music or checking your phone.
- Notice things you haven't seen before.
- Focus on your five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.
Stay Safe

Always keep your eyes open and stay aware of your surroundings, especially near roads, stairs or uneven surfaces.
Challenge: Try a 5-minute mindful walk this week and see what new things you notice!
