While gambling is illegal for people under 18 in Australia, research shows it is still common among teenagers. Some young people may start gambling because they think it is fun, but it can lead to harmful behaviours and ongoing challenges.
Why are young people at risk?
Young people can be more vulnerable to gambling harm due to factors such as:
- Easy access to online gambling platforms
- Exposure to gambling advertising through sport, social media and digital platforms
- Influence from family members or friends who gamble
- Greater likelihood of making impulsive or risky decisions during adolescence
Signs to watch for:
Potential warning signs may include:
- Frequently thinking or talking about gambling
- Spending more money than intended
- Trying to win back money you lost
- Being secretive about gambling activities
- Gambling as an escape from problems or for when you are feeling bad
- Increased conflict with family or friends
- Changes in school attendance or performance
